If you are wondering how to choose a digital camera, there are several factors that need careful consideration. Digital cameras are available in a wide range of specifications, features and prices. Each model seems better than the other, making the process of selecting the right digital camera a difficult one. However, by knowing the purpose for which it will be used, the selection can be easily narrowed down to a particular model.

Following are some important factors that should be considered when selecting a digital camera:

1. Budget

It is important to fix a budget beforehand because in the store there are so many models that it becomes difficult to decide and choose a particular model. When planning a budget, the buyer should keep in mind additional expenses towards accessories as well as extra units of batteries and storage device.

2. Point-and-shoot or DSLR

Nowadays, the latest range of point-and-shoot digital cameras are very advanced and offer the same picture quality as that available from basic level of DSLR cameras. The point-and-shoot cameras are easy to operate with minimum learning curve and do not require much maintenance. However, those who are looking for professional level of photography should choose a DSLR camera. These units are very expensive but provide exceptional picture quality. These cameras have higher specifications and features that make it possible to take pictures even under extreme conditions. There is a middle range of digital cameras. These cameras are considered ‘prosumer’ or ‘bridge’ cameras. This range of cameras is suitable for individuals who want the ease of a point-and-shoot camera as well as some features of a professional camera.

3. Purpose

If the camera will be used for taking simple photos of family members and friends then point-and-shoot digital cameras are sufficient for the job. A high-end camera is needed for sports, nature, studio or micro photography. If the camera would be taken near water bodies like seashore then it should be water resistant. Those who plan to do underwater photography have to choose an underwater camera or buy a special underwater casing for the digital camera.

4.  Megapixel

This is one of the most important factors when considering how to choose a digital camera. For general photography, a digital camera with 3-5 megapixels of resolution is sufficient. However, if the photos will be enlarged to poster size or larger then a digital camera with a minimum of 8-10 megapixels is needed. At the same time, the image quality also depends a lot on lens and sensor quality and not only on megapixels.

5. Optical Zoom or Digital Zoom

Buyers are recommended to choose a camera with optical zoom because it retains the picture quality. The digital zoom provides the same features that can be obtained later on using image editing software. For this reason, in place of digital zoom, a camera with optical zoom is recommended.

Other than these factors, the buyer should look for RAM and battery capacity. Digital cameras consume lots of power so it is important to buy an extra piece of battery. The camera must have good quality sensor that offers high resolution and It must have image stabilization feature. The menu, knobs and dials should be easy to understand and operate (see how to take good pictures with a digital camera). These are some of the most important things to consider when deciding how to choose a digital camera.
